Average Annual Expenditure of an Urban Household in the Year 1391

The Income and Expenditure Survey which dates back to 50 years ago in Iran, is one of the most important surveys of the Statistical Center of Iran. The major goal of the Survey is to estimate average income and expenditure of urban and rural households at both national and provincial levels. In the year 1391 (21 March 2012-20 March 2013), the number of sample households surveyed was 18535 and 19657 in urban and rural areas, respectively.

A glance at the most important results of the survey in urban and rural areas in the year 1391 indicates:

_         In the year 1391, the average total annual net expenditure of an urban household was 164281 thousand rials showing a 23.8% increase compared with the previous year.  Out of the total annual expenditures,  an urban household spent 44570 thousand rials (27.1%) on food and tobacco and 119711 thousand rials (72.9) on non-food. Among the food and tobacco expenditures, the greatest share went to meat (24%), while amongst non-food expenditures, the highest share was allocated to housing (46%).

_        The average annual reported income of an urban household was 167241 thousand rials which increased 28.3% compared with the previous year. Urban households received their income from wages and salaries (27.7%), agricultural and non-agricultural self-employment (16.8%) and other miscellaneous sources (55.6 %.)

_        According to the results, 93% of the surveyed urban households used piped gas, 92% used cell phone and 42% used private cars. These figures, for the year 1390, were 92%, 90% and 40%, respectively. Also regarding the type of tenure, 22% of urban households have been living in the rented and mortgaged dwellings. This figure for the year 1390
(
21 March 2011-20 March 2012) was 23%.

_        The average total annual net expenditure of a rural household was 108188 thousand rials showing a 28.8% increase compared with the previous year. Out of the total annual expenditures, the rural household spent 45796 thousand rials (42.3%) on food and tobacco, and 62391 thousand rials (57.7%) on non-food. Among the food and tobacco expenditures, the greatest share (25.0%) went to the flour, macaronis,  noodles, cereals, bread and its products, while amongst non-food expenditures, the highest share (28.1%) was allocated  to housing.

_        The average annual reported income of a rural household was 101281 thousand rials which increased 27.0% compared with the previous year. Rural households received their income from wages and salaries (24.9%), agricultural and non-agricultural self-employment (28.8%) and other miscellaneous sources (46.4 %.)

 The results show that 48% of surveyed rural households had access to piped gas, 81% used cell phone and 22% had private cars. These figures for the year 1390 (21 March 2011-20 March 2012) were 45%, 78% and 20%, respectively. Regarding type of tenure, 5% of rural households have been living in the rented and mortgaged dwellings. This figure was 5.2% for the year 1390.
